4 Mistakes Artist Should Avoid On Social Media

I have written in the past about how artists can have more success on their social media platforms. It has been proven that social media can serve as a great platform for artists to engage the fans that they already have; and have them buy your new album, concert tickets or merchandise.

Below I have listed four reasons why new rap artists fail at social media. Try to avoid these mistakes in order to have more success on social media.

its-all-about-meDon’t Make Everything About You

One of the main things that music fans find annoying is that when the artist that they’re following on social media is always talking about themselves or the merchandise they’re selling. I call this the “Me Factor” and a lot of artists have it. Constantly talking about yourself and your business on your social media pages will prompt your followers to unfollow you and never return again!

Don’t be so self absorbed, try to post relevant content from other music sources that your followers will enjoy and appreciate. Some of the things you can post can be links from other up and coming artists you enjoy listening to, the latest news on a major label artist, or just your thoughts and opinions on a music related topic.

Don’t Repeat Your Content On All Your Social Media Pages

Many of the music industry professionals we connect with, as well as ourselves have experienced a decrease in followers due to us posting the same content across all of our social media platforms. As as soon as we experimented with posting a variety of different content across all of our online music platforms, not only did we see an increase in followers, but more followers were commenting on our posts.

This has been proven to work time and time again not only for artists or record labels, but for many businesses that use social media to engage their customers. And they’ve had tremendous success with it.

engagefansEffectively Engaging Your Followers

It’s important to know how to gain followers and retain them for a long time. The way that you do this is by posting fresh content on a consistent basis. You want to post content that your followers will enjoy viewing. my advice is don’t stray too far away from music. Try to post things that you think your followers would comment on. Once you see them make comments around a certain topic, post more of it. Also ask for feedback on the post or ask them to “like” or “retweet” the post if they find it valuable.

Another way to engage and interact with your followers is to reply to the messages they send or post to you. Remember in order to gain a fan/customer you have to build up rapport with them. Engage your followers, talk to them, let them know your thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics. This will ultimately lead to success.

Make A Call To Action

The final step after you have accomplished all that has been listed above, you want to make a call to action. You want to inform your followers of your album or mixtape release. You want to direct them to your website where they can purchase merchandise or tickets to your performances. Your followers won’t know what you’re selling unless you tell them. Keep you call to actions moderate. Don’t flood your social media pages with links leading to your ITunes page. That’s very annoying! Moderation is the key to success!
