Branding By Association

Jay-Z_Drake_header-500x305Today I’m going to get into a promotion and marketing method that can literally double your exposure and fan base.

This method is called “branding by association.” Basically what it is, is when a company or an individual aligns himself with a well known brand. You see this all the time with fortune 500 companies, they will get with another well known company and do cross promotions or co-branding in order to boost their image in the eyes of the people. It builds their reputation and their credibility whenever they team up with another well known company.

So let’s talk about this from the view point of you being an artist. Your job as an up and coming artist is to gain recognition through the promotion and marketing of your music. One of the best ways you can gain recognition and clout is by teaming up with another up and coming rapper (whether in your city or else where) who has a steady growing support of fans.

In order for your efforts of branding through association to be effective you need to do features with another up and coming artist than has a steady growing fan base, has an established online social media presence, and has been on the radio a few time. The reason for this is because when you do a collaboration with another artist he will promote that record to his fans and any other exploitation mediums he uses when marketing a record.

Doing a feature song with another artist that already has clout is a great way to leverage your music promotion efforts. For example Smoke DZA, Wiz Khalifa, School Boy Q, A$AP Rocky,Chevy Woods, Big K.R.I.T, and Kendrick Lamar have collaborated with each other on different songs as they were on the come up; each of them boosting the credibility of each other.

The truth is as an up and coming artist people pay more attention to you when they see you associating yourself with another artist who is well known or is on the come up but has a steady growing fan base. As said it boosts your reputation and credibility and in turn will lead to you gaining more fans!

So go out there and collaborate with other artist that can promote you to their fans and through their music connections, it’s way easier than trying to promo your music by yourself. The thing is you can’t make it on your own, you have to go out and make connections, you have to go out there and make friends with other artists in an effort to build a relationship with someone or a group of people that can contribute to furthering your career.
