Battle rap has been around since the the inception of rap music. Most hip hop heads say that it really took off when rapper Busy Bee was rocking the mic; performing at Harlem World when Cool Moe Dee came up on stage after the performance. Moe Dee mentioned that Busy Bee was taking shots at him and saying that no other mcee could out ryhme him, and that’s when Cool Moe Dee released his onslaught of rhymes! This was known as the first commercial battle rap live on stage!

Fast forward to today and battle rap has grown into this big commodity with various rap battle leagues. It has gone from being freestyle rap battles, to written rap battles. It has gone from rap battling over beats, to rapping their rhymes acapella. So much has changed over the years including the lucrativeness of the rap battle business. Some say that there is an over saturation now seeing that rap battle leagues are popping up everywhere, and not producing much quality. But none the less the attention rap battles gets still remains strong.

Below we’ve listed the top 5 rap battle companies that have been making some noise within the music industry.

5) Grind Time Now

Grind Time Now is a great company that has been on the battle rap scene for a few years now. It use to be the largest battle network with subdivisions in New York, Florida, Georgia, but now they work out of their Los Angeles location. Like most of the leagues Grind Time does do battle tours in other cities. Grind Time is ran by Mad ILLZ and hosted by Lush One.

4) UW Battle League

UW Battle League stands for Ultimate Warrior Battle League. It is a league that is well known for putting on classic battle bouts comparable to that of Ultimate Rap League . In 2014 they put together one of their hottes rap bouts to date called “high Stakes”. It hosted a heavy handed card with the likes of:

ABU vs Nice
Daylyt vs B-Magic
Hitman Holla vs O-Red
Tsu Surf vs Calicoe
Loaded Lux vs Hollow Da Don

UDubb as it is now called by most, is a very promising battle rap company that has a bright future in the game.

Queen of the Ring is none other than the first prolific all female rap battle league. It’s CEO is Debo and its hosts are Vague and Babs Bunny.

We were going to list Don’t Flop in the number three position but finally decided to run with QOTR. it was a close call.

This company has earned their stripes over the years with producing some of the most magnificent talent within the rap battle scene.

Some of the top acts are: O’fficial, Krissy Yamagucci, Phara Funeral, Ms. Hustle, QB Black Diamond, Bonnie Godiva and 40 B.A.A.R.R.S. There are some critics out there that put a lower standard on female battle rap. I say that’s bullshit! if you ever watched a QOTR match you know that the majority of the matches were lit. Like that match between Couture and Ms. Pak, or 40 B.A.R.R.S. vs Tori Doe, or Jaz vs 40. I mean these were controversial and just nasty bouts that left everyone in shock! These ladies have bars for days and know how to insult their opponent! And dear I say have some matches that are better than their male counterparts.

2) King Of The Dot (KOTD)

Hailing from the “Great White North” is none other than the King of the Dot. This company has gained a lot of recognition over the years on an international scale. It started off with hosting battles in Toronto (which is a great city with a vibrant hip hop culture) to now being recognized as a top rap battle entity all over the world. It’s lead by Organik who has put on some of the biggest rap battle matches to date.

KOTD also has a division called Ground Zero for new rappers to try out. KOTD Fresh Coast is a division for events in California.

calicoe-vs-loaded-lux1) Ultimate Rap League

The number 1 spot without a doubt goes to a company co-owned by 2 individuals who took rap battles to the forefront. Without a doubt they made it possible for everyone else in the rap battle field to eat. They went from being a street magazine and dvd distributors, to owning the best rap battle league to date. There’s no way around the contribution to this sector of the hip hop culture.

URL was co-founded by Tony “SMACK” Mitchell and Eric Beasley. Together they formed a platform that showcased major and up and coming artists through their dvd’s and magazine. They then made the switch to battle rap just when social media was taking off, and it payed off! Now hosting a series of rap battles, their most infamous one being Summer Madness, they’ve turn their passion into very lucrative business.
