This post entitled “How many rappers have died from lean?” Is a follow up post to “Why Do Rappers Drink Lean?”

The culture of drinking lean started in the streets and urban neighborhoods in Houston Texas.

Later on it was adopted by many rappers like UGK, 3 Six Maffia, and Lil Wayne who brought it to the mainstream.

And as a result of it made it popular and more people (Mostly men) started to consume lean even more.

As mentioned in a previous post about rappers drinking; “Texas Tea” also known as Sizzurp or Purple Drank is a term for a concoction which includes a prescription-strength cough syrup.

The prescription-strength cough syrup used in purple drank contains codeine and promethazine. Again, this is very harmful to the body seeing that rappers drink this in an excessive amount.

How Many Rappers Have Died From Lean?

First off, in general there have been several people outside of rap who have died from sippin lean.

These are everyday people like you and me who because of the street culture though it was cool to mix this type of drink and as a result of it is no longer alive.

It’s definitely something that can cause your heart to stop. Lil Wayne recently stopped drinking it because he said it almost killed him. His body would shake and he felt drowsy and sick all the time.

It was even affecting his music. So which rappers have died from it? Well we can first start with the legendary DJ Screw. DJ Screw was legendary in the south for inventing the “Chopped & Screwed” style of hip hop.

DJ Screw’s effects included skipping beats, stop-time, using the same record on dual turntables, and scratching.

He released his mixtapes called “Screwtapes,” selling them out of his house to friends and fans, and later out of his independent record store, Screwed Up Records and Tapes on the southeast side of Houston.

Other rappers who fell victim to drinking lean were: Lil Jay Jay, D-Dawg, Kastro Kash, Infamus, Jhonny Streetz, Pimp C, and most recently from the A$AP Mobb – A$AP Yams.

These are just a few names of rappers , dj’s and producers, both indie and major that have died from the drink.

Although these men were old enough to make their own decisions, it is up to us as lovers and protectors of the hip hop culture to inform people; including rappers on the detrimental effects of drinking Sizzurp!
