Who is Eternal Swyft? Eternal Swift is a 26 year old up and coming Urban Hip Hop artist from Los Angeles. Known for his rapsy voice and distinguished lyrical ability, Swyft’s first single “The American Dream” has made it onto various radio stations around the U.S. and in its first week charted in the Top 40 Pop for Satellite, College, and Internet radio. A video was shot for The American Dream, and it has totalled over 50,000 views since being released online.

Eternal Swyft has been working arduously to get his music recognition. In doing so he has created a number of opportunities for himself including being an opening act for legendary Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, and Joel Ortiz, who is one fourth of hip hop’s most lyrical savvy group Slaughterhouse. Eternal Swift is currently promoting the release of his highly anticipated album entitled “Plan B,” which will be available for download on July 24th, 2012.

The overall album has a conscious, self reflecting, and inspirational theme to it. It’s something that is rare in today’s world of hip hop where money, cars, women, jewellery and the “gangsta” mentality plague rap music. Only once in a while someone comes along and creates music for us to enjoy that is filled with truth, integrity, and has meaning and depth to it, and it looks like the next artist to do that is going to be Eternal Swyft.

Eternal Swyft’s Debut album “Plan B” starts off with a hard hip hop style track called “The Rise.” Swyft’s raspy voice sits well over this rugged hip hop instrumental, spewing a continuous flow that does the track much justice. On this song it’s evident that Swyft’s ability to get lyrical is on full display, rapping out lines like “Switch ciphers/ ruin to a writer/ polighter; in effect my skills got much nicer.” He also does a good job on playing with words when he raps “It’s so fitting/ that this is the beginning/ to the starting of an ending/ of this doing that is trending/ cause the visions see it clearly/ so listen just don’t hear me.”

Hip hop heads will definitely enjoy listening to this track, everything syncs so well together and he definitely shows that he has lyrical skills.

On the album’s second song “Here To Stay” Eternal Swyft raps over a more easy going melody. The instrumental is lead by a smooth playing acoustic guitar, over a kick and a snare; simple yet affective. “Here to Stay” is a song that reflects Swyft’s undying passion for being a rapper. He expresses throughout the first verse that he’s focused, always striving to succeed, and has to cease this moment of opportunity for him to become a great rapper.

In his second verse you become more drawn into what he’s saying, he describes being persistent and stopping at nothing to achieve his goals, which is admirable and something we should be all striving to do. It’s hard not to feel the depth of his words when he says with conviction “Oh this dream I truly believe in so sorry that I switched my goals/ but this moment I gotta cease it this is what I chose.”

Switching goals can be discouraging sometimes but Swyft says he’s still pushing forward by ceasing the moment because this is the life he chose. Pushing forward, never giving up, ceasing every opportunity that leads you closer to achieving your goals is what the basis of this song is about. And when you listen to it you can’t help but to be inspired by it.

We live in a world that seems to be getting worst as the days go by. There is constant war over oil and land, politicians and government officials are doing a poor job of leading countries, there is constant division amongst the people, multiple senseless killings, and racism and discrimination are still prevalent. And on top of that there are more tornados, earthquakes, and floods than ever before!

In Eternal Swyft’s leading single “The American Dream” he goes into much social and political commentary about these issues. What exactly is the American Dream? What is it worth? What will you do to achieve it? Is chasing the American Dream worth it? Or is it not all cracked up to be what our government officials lead us to believe? This is a very powerful track that talks about tragic events that are happening on a daily basis, and it really makes you examine the American Dream and if it’s worth chasing.

“Sometimes” is a track that instantly hits you and makes you bop your head in delight.

On this song, Swyft stomps all over a west coast style beat in a very unique way. He raps a story about one guy who is infatuated with the thug lifestyle but doesn’t really know how it is to live that type of life. This story is about a poser getting caught up in the gangster mentality and lifestyle, and getting confronted about it by real gangsters; and it’s sad to say that the poser ends up losing his life. This serves as a strong message to the youth out there that posing to be a thug or wanting to become a thug will always come with severe consequences; one of them is losing your life!

Eternal Swyft has the talent for writing reflective songs with heart-felt lines. He has the ability to delve deep within himself and write about true to life situations. Swyft showcases his ability to bring true profound feelings to life in “Never Enough,” it’s a song on the album that talks about three different situations which most of us have experienced or someone close to us has experienced.

The first verse talks about a man who has everything to live for, a beautiful wife, daughter, and loving family, but he is dying of cancer. Swyft raps about knowing this man and he goes into great detail of how this man’s life was and how his physical attributes started to diminish when he was diagnosed with cancer. It’s hard to see someone you know wither away right before your eyes and Swyft writes about that experience.

The second verse is about a platonic relationship where one person wants to be more than friends but the other person doesn’t reciprocate the same kind of feelings. Again, that’s something that most of us can relate to, so some listeners with feel more drawn into what is being said than others who can’t relate to it. And the final verse is about self examination, Eternal Swyft puts his life in perspective with what’s going on in the world.

The final track that stands out on this album, and will definitely have a great impact on the listeners is “Both Sides.” On this song Eternal Swyft brings back the art of story-telling, which is something that has been missing from hip hop for many years. Swyft raps and paints us a picture of a 20th century white supremacist that falls in love with a black woman and gets her pregnant.

The overall basis of the song is to be true to yourself, never fight what you feel for someone else just because others will be objective of the situation. Never hide who you really are because by living a double life you’re only fooling yourself. I don’t want to give up what happens in the end, but the story is woven beautifully and listeners will be captivated by it until the end.

It’s very commendable that Eternal Swyft chooses to rap about racial and other social issues, which only a very small amount of rappers choose to address. But in order for us to resolve these issues we need to have an open and candid discussion about them. And Swift is laying down the foundation for us to discuss them.

Eternal Swyft’s debut album “Plan B” is one that is needed in hip hop right now. This album is self reflective, conscious, has great stories, is laced with social and political commentary, and is inspirational. Swyft’s songs are mostly a reflection of what’s going on in the world today, he makes true to life songs which can easily be compared to the ones that Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kwali, or Mos Def would make. An incredible thoughtful and insightful album like “Plan B” really needs to be supported to create a balance in hip hop.

As I said earlier hip hop is plagued and one sided with drugs, violence, jewellery, and misogyny and we need to support artist like Eternal Swyfts so hip hop can be seen as a music genre of balance that gives opportunities to the many rappers with different styles.

“Plan B” is intriguing and will definitely inspire the listener to examine the world in a more meaningful way and also encourage them to chase after their dreams and never stop until they accomplish ever last one of them.
