How To Have Success As A New Rap Artist

music-grammy-awards-2013-press-room-5With more and more people wanting to pursue a career as a rap artist, never before has it been so challenging to make it in the music industry. There are literally millions of people around the world who you have to compete with in order to reach that top spot.

Among the millions of kats trying to make it in the music industry every year, you have to be able to stand out in order to gain recognition over them. You have to know How To Grind To The Top. You need a formula for success. Below I have listed three things that you can do that will help you gain recognition and status over other up and coming rappers.

Be A Unique Artist

One of the things that new rap artists will always say is that they’re unique, but when you ask them what’s unique about them, they give you an answer that tells you that they are doing what everyone else is doing which doesn’t make them unique at all. In order to set yourself apart from the crowd you have to truly be unique. Remember when Nicky Minaj came out? She had a unique rapping style and her wardrobe was out of this world. On top of that everyone was interested in knowing if her butt was real or not. She really had everyone talking about her. Her uniqueness attracted millions of people to her, which allowed her to sell millions of records.
When drake and Kanye West came out they both added a unique element to the rap game. Drake brought that lyrical – rap singer element to the game. Of course Ja Rule and 50 Cent has done their fare of singing on tracks, but Drake does it in a soulful R&B way. That’s what makes him unique. I can go on and on about how many rappers made millions of dollars due to their uniqueness. To stand out from your competitors, in your case other up and coming rappers, you have to be unique! You have to have a unique name, image, style, and personality.
Build An Artist Brand
What sets successful rappers apart from struggling rappers is their brand. In order to have more success in the music industry and also create more financial opportunities for yourself, you have to develop an artist brand. You have to keep in mind that a brand is more than just a log. I’m not going to dwell on branding in this article because I’ve written on artist branding a number of times. If you would like to know how to build and artist brand read my previous article entitle “How To Create An Artist Brand”
Build A Solid Contact List
One of the things that is imperative to you success is your contact list. Don’t believe the hype when rappers say that they’re self made millionaires, there is no such thing. Every successful person is successful is in the position that they are in due to people helping them get there. The saying is true “It’s all about who you know.”
So your job is to collect names of other up and coming artists, A&R’s, managers, producers, PR personnel, engineers etc. and add them to you contact list. When you go to a music event or a performance look for and make contact with some of the heavy hitters at the event. When you’re online on twitter, linked in, hip hop websites and blogs, collect information of those who can help push your career forward.
