3 Reasons You Should Sign A Publishing Deal

labelsandpublishersOkay I have been getting a few request from our Google Plus group to post a topic about Music Publishing.

I have been following some of you and I can honestly say that that there are quite a bit of you who are not ready for a publishing deal. And there are some of you who are as ready as your going to be, so I will direct this message to you.

If you do not know which side you are on I can help you with that. Before you even think of pursuing a music publishing company you are going to need some level of success as an independent/unsigned artist. This level of success includes a decent sized fan base of a couple thousand people, successful albums or mixtape sales, concert ticket sales, a social media presence, chart topping songs and continuous reviews and features on music blogs and in magazines.

This is to show the publishing agency that you’re an artist that they can generate income for through the licensing of your music. The point is to make you money not have you sign to them, and have you sitting on their roster generating no income.

So for all of you who would like to get sign to a publishing deal, you have to work hard to get the aforementioned in order so that your publishing deal can be a lucrative one. Meaning you can negotiate better terms if you have more hits and already generating a stable income from album or single sales.

For all those of you who have everything in order but are sort of on the fence about whether you should sign a publishing deal or not, here are 5 solid reason’s why you should consider doing so.

1) Music Publishing Is Intricate

Being your own publisher can get complicated because there are so many aspects of publishing that can get intricate. Everything from the contracts to the filing of documents, to the different types of licenses you have to issue, it’s all a hand full. A publishing company has a group of professionals on their team that can handle all the intricacies involved in getting you music licenses. They handle all the document work, issue out the contracts, and collect the payments. All you do is sit back and get paid your royalty check.

2) Music Publishers Have A Huge Contact List

Music publishers have a huge contact list they can tap into when licensing your music. They have contacts to the biggest radio stations, dj’s, video game production companies, tv broadcast stations, and film companies. It would take you years to collect these contacts. take the burden off yourself by letting a publishing company reach out to their contacts on your behalf.

3) Spend More Time Making Music

Probably one of the most important aspects of signing a publishing deal is that you get more time to work on your music. All the stress load is off you and given to your publishing company who has the right type of man power to handle that.

This free time should be spent practicing your rhymes, recording new music, and doing performances. While your music is being licensed around the world for, you’re doing what you do best, and that’s create beautiful music for the world to enjoy. it can’t get any easier than that!
