How To License Your Music

hiphoppushAn Artist’s music career can be very short. On average it is usually 3-5 years, if that. Those who manage to pass those years have a good sized following, produce quality music, and work their ass off to remain at the top. If you are lucky enough to stay at the top of your game for many years you’re going to have to have continuous income coming in to feed, shelter, clothes yourself, and live a good life style.

One of the ways to do this is to license your music for money. There are a number of ways you can do this including through radio, TV, movies, and video games. The problem is many up and coming artist, if not all don’t know how to go about licensing their music. A lot of new artist don’t even know how to generate even the simplest income through licensing their music to either commercial, satellite, or online radio. And because of it they have a hard time earning any money to put back into their music or to feed themselves. I have been saying this for years that there is no reason why a new artist should not be making any money. None.

If you are not licensing your music you should be performing for money, if you are not performing for money you should be getting paid for a feature on a track, if you are not getting paid to be featured on a track you should be selling merchandise. There are literally a dozen ways to make money as an up and coming artist, you shouldn’t be totally broke! You should be finding which venues pay ASCAP or BMI members to perform, and book a show there, or be an opening act. You should find out what commercial or non-commercial radios pay Performing Rights members, and get your music played there. Youtube has a partner program where they pay you based on how much views your video gets. Have you tried that avenue? You can be getting paid every time someone watches your music video on Youtube.

Again, there is no real reason why a new rap artist should be broke; there’s too much money out here. So the question you probably have is “How do I publish and license my music?” And that my friend is a good question. In fact it’s better than going out there and trying to figure it all on your own, that will take up a lot of your time because the information is not easy to find. I also hear artist say a lot of music industry insiders won’t give them that type of knowledge, I simply don’t know why. As for me, being a record label owner, I like to see talented artist succeed. I like to see a new rapper go out there and get paid for shows, radio play and his/her music merchandise. So I give them the knowledge on how to do so.
