However, there will be odd times where these companies will call for a demo to be sent to their physical address.

As a production music writer or composer your job will entail creating songs and instrumentals for the use of TV, film and video games. The cool thing about it is most production writers work from the comfort of their own home and create projects using their home studio.

You don’t need to have a big studio in your basement. You can have a Digital Audio Workstation set up and create some amazing music. In fact that’s how most people start.

Working Independently As a Production Music Composer

As I just stated you can work independently at home using your studio or Digital Audio Workstation. Individuals who take this route are independent contractors and work to license or sell their work to music libraries or directly to the companies that need their music for projects.

This route of course is where you can earn the most money but it will take time to build up your name and reputation.

You have to work hard to network and get your brand out there so more people can seek your services.

But the end result will be very beneficial to you because you get to earn more money and not give up a big percentage to an agency.

Production Music Agreement

Alternatively you can choose to work under an production music company. If this is the case then you will have to sign a contract called a production music agreement.

By signing a production agreement you enter into a contract with a production company to make a record, which, if successful, will be sold or licensed to a third–party label for release.

Under a production agreement, the producer will actually earn more than the traditional 3–4 percent royalty that the average music producer will make. The Production Company will own — take an assignment of — the master recordings and exclusive rights to the artist’s recording services.

The production company is now in a position to ‘shop’ the artist to a major or independent label, or alternatively sign a physical or digital distribution deal.
