How Do Rappers Song’s Get Leaked?

Some Rapper’s Leak Their Own Songs

Yes, you read that correctly. A lot of rappers do indeed leak their own songs as a way to see if their audience is likes the single. If the fans show that they like the song through high streaming, likes, comments, and in some cases downloads from certain websites, the rapper will then proceed to make a video for that single.

Since the leaked song is doing well among fans and the video is taking off because of the single, the artist will follow up with another single in order to create a bigger buzz for the album release.

It’s extremely rare now a days that a rap artist with drop an album after just one single, the rapper (or any artist for that matter) will release three to five singles before they drop an album. This is to create momentum and anticipation for the album release.

Leak rap songs that so well can benefit the artist. I know this is hard for independent artists, but with major artists when a single takes off online, through social media or a streaming website, the record label will want to get it immediately on radio. Again, the bigger the buzz and anticipation for the album release, the better. And no, radio is NOT dead.

On the other hand if the leaked single doesn’t hit it’s back to the drawing board; releasing a few singles allows the record label to analyze what is and isn’t working. Another reason why rap artists put out so many songs is because the way people consume music now a days.

We live in a music streaming world where music fans want to stream multiple songs back after back. So as a rap artist you have to keep up with the demand or become irrelevant.

Songs Are Leaked By The Music Producer

Many of the leaked rap songs are done so by the music producer or music engineer. A lot of rappers record songs and send them to the music producer via email, and once the producer has them in their possession he/she can pretty much do whatever they want with it. I have to mention that not all producers are like this, some producers will have pre-released songs in their possession and hold onto it safely. But others will see it as an opportunity to share it with the world.

Leaking songs are illegal, so their have been many people that have been sued due to leaking an artist’s song, this includes music producers, engineers, hackers, and music blog owners. Also, many rap artists have been sued for releasing songs with samples that have not been cleared by the artist owning the song. This is a topic that I will address at another date and time that I’m sure my readers will enjoy.

Hackers Leak Rap Songs

A common way that rap music is leaked is by computer hackers. Many hackers will search database’s and come across folders full of songs. Hackers hack into personal computers as well as the database’s of large companies such as Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, Facebook, 8tracks, etc.

These are database’s where you can find music kept by major label artists and producers. Some songs are indeed leaked to the public, and it could turn out to be a good thing depending on the people’s reaction to the song.

I’ll get into that a bit later. But some of these leaked songs, depending on how known the artist is, are sold to other hackers or to regular people on the black market. Some songs never get shared or uploaded online for public consumption, they’re kept by people to listen to at home by themselves.

Do Leak Songs Help or Hurt The Artist?

A leaked song or leaked songs can benefit or hurt an artist depending on the situation. Of course there are artists who don’t want their music leaked regardless if it helps them or not, which is understandable. If an artist’s single is leaked and does not catch on, it may indicate to the artist that he shouldn’t have that particular song as a lead rollout. The song should rather be an album cut and not a lead single.

If an artist has a song from the album leaked that wasn’t considered a single, and it doesn’t get a good response, he may not add it to the album. If it does well he may leave it on the album and even put it as a single; depending on the feedback and how people are interacting with it on social media. If a whole album leaks, the same outcome will follow.

If the album is buzzing and creating positive feedback – including views, streams, comments, and likes, the record label will more than likely push the release date up and put out the album at an earlier date than intended. This is to benefit from the momentum build up of the album being released.

If the album is leaked and there is a flat response, and fans are not really into the music being put out by the artist, the record label may decide to scrap the whole album all together. So again, whether a leaked a single or album hurts or helps an artist just depends on the fans reaction of that leak. If people enjoy the music, the record label will take advantage of that, if not then they may get the artist to replace the single or the leak songs. Every case is different.

Is It Illegal To Listen To Leaked Music?

The short answer is no. It is not illegal to listen to leaked music because you’re not the one who leaked it. There is no unlawful doing on your part because you know anything about the leak, and you didn’t partake in anyway of the leaked music.

That was done by someone else, or a group of people that had nothing to do with you. You simply say the song and listened to it. The song was leaked unbeknownst to you. So you’re not going to get charged or go to jail, or be implicated in anything unlawful if you listen to leaked songs.

Why Do Rappers Have Unreleased Songs?

Rappers have unreleased songs for several reasons. When a rapper gets in the studio to create an album they have to do a lot of songs. When I say a lot of songs I mean typically over 50 songs. From those 50 songs they have to narrow down which songs they want to put on their album. They do this by choosing which songs flow with each other. They have to decide which songs are a great fit for each other based on the album title and the mood of the album.

Rappers are not the only artists that do this, all artists from every genre of music does this. They create a lot of music material for the album and end up choosing a dozen or so that fit well with each other. The rest of the songs remain with them or their music producer as unreleased songs.

Unrelease songs are assets. The reason being is that they can be used as part of another album, or released onto streaming sites one by one, anytime the artist feels to do so. Surprise unreleased songs are appreciated by fans all over the world. Unreleased songs are something new and fresh fans can listen to, no matter how they sound (a lot these songs are unmixed and unmastered). Fans appreciate these songs in their purest forms.

What Does Unreleased Music Mean?

Unreleased music means, music that has not yet been released by the artist. Unreleased music is music that is held and kept by the rap artist and not released for public consumption. Sometimes artists keep these unreleased songs because they don’t think the songs are good enough to release.

While other times they hold onto the unreleased songs to add to a future album; if the songs fit the tone and mood of that album.
