Why Do Rappers Get Shot

Before I get into the topic Why Do Rappers Get Shot, lets go back to when rap first became the most consumed genre of music in the U.S.

In 2017 rap music became the number one listened to genre of music in the U.S. This was according to Nielsen Soundscan’s 2017 year end report. When we fast forward to today the statistics for the most part are the same.

With rap being the most consumed music in America, thus making it the most influential, why do most of its artist end up dead at such an early age?

Whether it’s through gun violence or overdosing on drugs, what is it about this genre of music that leads its artists down such a dark road?

In this article I will discuss the reasons why rappers get shot, and hopefully you will gain more understanding on why rap is the only genre of music where its creators die by gun violence.

Many Rappers Have Ties To Street Gangs

It’s no secret that many rappers have been involved in gang activities. We know this by listening to these rappers brag about their gang affiliations in their songs.

Countless rap artists have been locked up in the past due to committing crimes as gang members, and they still carry that mentality and behavior throughout their rap career.

Some rappers are associated with a gang mainly for protection, while others have ties with gangs mainly for street credibility.

A lot of rappers have been associated with gangs and claim to be gang members. For example, Suge Knight, the former owner of Death Row Records was a well known PIRU BLOODs gang member.

List of Rappers That Claim To Be Gang Members

I’ve only listed the rappers that are known , the list is extensive and includes many more rappers on the come up, but I won’t mention them here.

Most of these gang affiliated rappers had beef with other gang members before they became famous rappers.

The beef has followed these rappers into their careers, and the majority of them fall victim to unresolved issues with these rival gang members from the past.

Rappers Get Shot & Killed Out of Jealousy and Envy

A lot of people reading this title above most likely won’t understand a rapper being shot out of jealousy; but it’s true. The typical rapper (Not all of them) comes from poverty.

He grows up in an environment full of hate, drugs, violence, fast money, and people who don’t want him to succeed.

Please keep in mind that not everyone from poor neighborhoods have the mentality of not wanting to see others from their same neighborhood succeed.

The envious are a few, but can still have a major impact on your growth and success as another poor individual trying to make it in life.

The envious will see you going to school to try and become a better person and say “Why are you going to school? School is for nerds.” Or “You’ll never graduate, you know you ain’t smart enough”.

Famous Rappers That Use Ableton

Or they’ll see you trying to start up your own business and try to discourage you by saying “A business? Didn’t you fail math? You can’t run a business, besides only Arabs and Chinese have stores in our community, black people can’t run businesses.”

I know it all too well, because I grew up in these poor neighborhoods and witnessed it first hand. I seen it everywhere. It’s sad but true. This is the crabs in the barrel mentality.

The person who’s trying to castrate you and hold you back has issues of their own. They usually have low self-esteem, was a horrible student, is a bad employee (if they have a job at all), disingenuous, unreliable, irresponsible and much more.

They take all of their short comings and try to project them onto you. If you’re trying to become a rapper and have a little success with it, envious people think that you think that you’re better than them.

If you start making money from rap through album sales and performing at shows, they think that you don’t deserve the money, and you’ll end up spending it all and going broke.

If you really make it to become a successful rap artist with fame and fortune, the envy and jealousy boils so much within them that they now want to kill you in order to take that all from you.

The thought is that if they can’t have what you have, or if they can’t be successful along with you, then you can’t enjoy any success.

A lot of these individuals grow up with you in poverty and see you become successful, and envy you because you made it out of poverty while they’re still stuck there.

Instead of working hard, being ambitious, going after their dreams, and getting less distracted by nonsense, and making it on their own merits, they think your success should be theirs.

Again, if they can’t have success you can’t have it either, so they are willing to kill you so that you can be as low as they are. It’s a training of thought that is sick and twisted and the person is in need of help, and doesn’t even know it.

Rappers Get Shot Due To Their Hardcore Lyrics

The street rappers have a lot on their plate to handle. If they rap about selling drugs, shooting guns, and having lots of money, they have to prove that to other people who consider themselves gangsters.

There is a saying in the neighborhood I come from called “show and prove”. I’m not saying we came up with the term, I’m saying that term is used in our neighborhood towards people who say certain things, and we want them to prove to us what they’re saying is true.

So we say “Oh is that right? show and prove!” meaning show us what you’re saying is real. If you’re from a real project or hood I’m sure you’ve heard the same thing or something similar.

When you say in your rap songs that you’re a killer, drug dealer, can’t get robbed, and you have lots of guns and money, someone from a neighborhood gang or someone affiliated with a street gang is going to say “show and prove”.

Meaning they want to see how tough you are. They want to see if you’re really a killer, and are really as tough as you claim to be. Rappers who can’t prove their toughness sadly end up getting beat up or shot and killed.

Wrong Place At The Wrong Time

This is a lesser observed reason why rappers get shot and killed, it’s a case of being at the right place at the wrong time. It not only happens to rappers but many inner city youths.

Rappers live a very public life and can sometimes be unaware that trouble may be close by.

They could be out shopping or out eating dinner with friends and family, and a rival gang member shows up and executes them. This is called being at the right place at the wrong time.

So you can be at the movies, dinner, school, work, the corner store etc. And at that time trouble shows up and spots you, knowing that they have an issue with you.

This is an unfortunate situation that rappers who are gangster have to deal with. And what’s worst is if the beef is not particularly with the rapper, but someone from his crew.

The rapper by default takes on the beef because he’s associate or a part of the gang his friend is in.

Selling The Thug Rapper Image As A Rapper Who Isn’t One

This is just a side note to add to this article, and it’s about rapper who portray themselves as thugs but are really not.

To understand this train of thought you have to realize that in order to become a successful rapper, you have to be good at selling tough image, even if you’re not a tough person.

The more extreme and violent the lie is, the better it is for you as a rapper because it gives off the perception that your living up to the rap image.

From the onlookers and consumers of the music it looks real, and that’s what sells. The more plain you are the more boring you seem.

So street credibility, lying in your rhymes about selling keys of cocaine, drinking and smoking all day, sleeping with multiple women, having expensive cars and jewelry; add to the rap image.

It’s all entertainment but people believe that it’s real, and once they believe that it’s real, they’ll buy into more of it.

4 Rappers That Predicted Their Deaths

Notorious B.I.G. – Biggie was born in New York and was considered to be a lyrical giant.

He was only 2 albums in before he got murdered in an La drive by shooting in 1997. Notorious always rapped about violence and being killed, heck, his first album was called “Ready To Die”.

In a song called Suicidal Thoughts he raps “I’m glad I’m dead…I swear to God I feel like death is calling me.”

Tupac Shakur – When listening to Tupac you would think that he had an infatuation with death. he wrote lot of songs about him not wanting to live no more and how he envisioned people shooting and killing him.

In a song called Unconditional Love he raps “ask mama I got this urge to die, witnessed the tears falling free from my eyes, before she could reply.”

In another song called Nigg*z Done Changed he raps “I been shot and murdered, can’t tell you how it happened word for word, but best believe n*ggas gon’ get what they deserve.”

Big L – Big L was one of the best underground hip-hop artists in the 90’s. He was a rapper from Harlem, NY and had amazing lyrical skills. His life was taken at the tender age of 24 in a drive by shooting.

He predicts his own death in a song called Casualties of A Dice Game, he raps “I watched all of them, run for they share / And all I can do was stare / I got weak and fell on my rear / Now I can hear the sirens, that means here comes the Jakes / But it’s too late, I’m knockin’ on the pearly gates.”

Proof – Was the best friend of fellow Detroit rapper Eminem, and was shot inside of a Detroit nightclub. What’s really strange about his death is that he predicted where he was going to die. In the song 40 Oz he rapped “I’m in the club to beef, you gotta murder me there”.
