This is due to the majority of the rap artists coming from poor environments that are riddled with violence, crime, drugs, and little to no employment opportunities.

Rappers use curse words a lot in the music to express the frustration they’re feeling about their environment, life situation, dealing with pain and tragic events, and also to release anger.

The final reason why rappers curse so much in their music is that it’s now actually championed for them to do so. The biggest champion is the record label.

The record labels have bought into the rough image of a rapper and won’t sign you unless you are vulgar. This includes calling women bitches and the men niggas.

I know this first hand by being in meetings with some of the record label executives. I’m in the meeting trying to broker a deal for an artist and they say “he’s not swearing enough, is he really a street rapper?” or “Can he say the N-word a little bit more in his songs?

He needs to sell the image more”. It may sound like a surprise to you, but this is what happens.

The record labels pay these artists to keep up the rapper image, and the rappers do so because they want the money and fame. The black record label executives don’t ask for rappers to do this.

Mainly because they know that whatever the rappers talk about in their music will resonate first with the streets, and then the world.

They know signing a rap artists comes with the vulgar language in the music and also the lifestyle outside of music, which can include gang related activities. It’s just all apart of the game.

So just to wrap up with section. Rappers use profanity to express their emotions just like everyone else. Rappers also swear because they are now, in a sense, getting paid to do so.

It’s all apart of their rap image, and to be honest, rap fans don’t mind hearing all that swearing. Rap is the most consumed music in North America according to Nielsen Soundscan. It’s a testament that people don’t mind the swear words – if they did they wouldn’t be buying the music.
